Tufted titmice

We breakfasted on Standard Time with titmice.  After lunch, I saw a brown headed nuthatch and a downy woodpecker.  A brief flurry of birds left me an impression of yellow which might have been a pine warbler, or a trick of light.  Fluff blew from the saltbushes.  And it was dark by 5:30pm.  

A question that nagged me was whether we could have an Election Day fall during Daylight Saving Time.  I think so because the Election rule is first Tuesday after the first Monday of November.  Daylight Saving ends on the first Sunday of November.  So in a year when November 1st is a Monday then Tuesday would be Election Day but Daylight Saving would not end till the following Sunday, November 7th.  

 

Ups and downs

Yesterday was sunny and unseasonably hot - the Weather Service said 80° which was not a record.  However the warmth did not result in much to see.  Chickadees visited the feeder.  Geese paddled by.  Flying insects caught the light but I could not tell what they were or get a picture.  Mint moths and yellow jackets and seed fluff flew around.  I thought I saw a butterfly but it might have been a leaf.  Overnight, the temperature dropped.  

Today was still sunny but about twenty degrees cooler with a Northeast wind.  A flock of birds zipped around the trees too fast for the camera, but at least one was a bluebird.  Brown headed nuthatches dodged chickadees on the feeder.  Earlier the chickadees had dodged house finches.  A kingfisher shot down the creek in a blur.  Then after sunset we had all manner of strange beings come knocking.  And tonight we sleep long.  

Wakefield reported that the precipitation for October was ab inch and a half compared to an average of nearly four inches. For the year, we are down a foot from an average of 42.8".  Blame El El Niño.  

Still blowing

High tide, driven by the wind and moon, was up in the grass.  The gusty wind was wet but there wasn't measurable rain.  A morning glory bloomed anyway.  Seed eaters got too hungry to wait out the storm.  A brown headed nuthatch joined the regulars.  

In the late afternoon, gulls played with the wind over the creek.  I think they were laughing gulls in winter plumage and larger ring billed gulls or maybe herring gulls.  But the light was bad and the window misted, so I couldn't be sure.  Cormorants were out fishing so I suppose that's what brought the gulls.  A great blue heron flew from the water's edge.  One of the larger saltbushes blew over.into the grass.  

Hot & humid

There was a storm in the night that left rain in the birdbath and leaves in the pool.  A brown headed nuthatch came to breakfast.  Only one frog was present.  I think they travel on rainy nights.  No sign of the green head, thank goodness!   Morning was cloudy and seemed like the sort of weather to bring out biters and their predators, but I only glimpsed a couple of  dragonflies.   There were more butterflies.  I saw a red spotted purple, a snout, skippers, and a hairstreak.  Several hummer visits might have all been the same bird.  The afternoon was mostly sunny and hot.  The butterfly milkweed was loaded with pods instead of caterpillars.  It has not been a good year for insects.  I blamed the drought but K blamed "Mosquito Joe"  the bug spray poisoner of suburbia.  Sunset painted a pink streak across the deepening blue sky.  

Crab

Fortunately, the sticky heat was frequently relieved by a breeze.  Lots of cumulus blew up from the Southwest.  The brown headed nuthatch was back  The dark spider posed like an orb weaver but what I could see of the web was just a tangle of threads with no pattern.  A couple of duskywings argued over the mountain mint.  I posed a drowned camel cricket.

I found no frogs in the pool today, but a mud crab instead.  It pinched my fingers and toes and got away into deep water.  Speaking of pinches, National Geographic introduced the Schmidt sting pain index.  A hummer made a brief visit to its feeder.  A male slaty skimmer used the smaller perch but spent much of the time hunting.  I saw a reddish dot in the sky and got a blurry shot of a Carolina saddleback dragonfly.  A titmouse saw something hair-raising.  Once again, a sprinkle made me take the camera inside.  

Rain

Another hibiscus flower appeared.  The sky looked ominous in the morning but I swam anyway.  A  few May and June beetles should have been thankful for that.  The frogs resented it.  I evicted three of them several times and also disposed of the one I found dead in the skimmer.  Meanwhile, the sky sprinkled me.  There was a brief interlude of sun when I got out, then a shower even though the sun kept shining.  The dark spider in the azalea was hard to see. 

A female great blue skimmer dragonfly hunted from the garden stake perches.  Carpenter mimic bees fussed over the mountain mint.  A yellow butterfly disappeared into the trees.  A skink hid from me, but not well.  A hummer flew at the kitchen window then to the feeder.  At lunch, I saw a brown headed nuthatch.  A Carolina wren seemed to be stuffing vegetation into the birdhouse.  Fingers crossed!  Mid afternoon, the showers turned to a hard rain that flooded Norfolk and cancelled events.  However, we only got about a quarter inch.  

Humid

Light rain fell in the morning and the temperature was moderate.  I glimpsed a goldfinch but bigger birds scared it off.  At lunch, K fed the mother and child crows.  A brown thrasher was interested in the leftovers as well as what fell from the seed feeder.  A brown headed nuthatch sneaked around bigger birds to get seeds.  A molting titmouse was more easily intimidated.  

Mist collected on the orchard spider's web. I waited to swim till mid afternoon when surfaces were drier.  The usual beetles were swimming too including a green June beetle.  A duskywing fed on the mountain mint alongside bees and wasps.  They were joined by a gray hairstreak.  The sun began to find loopholes in the cloudcover but mosquitoes were beginning to fine me.  

More birds

Yesterday's thunderstorm brought little water but did moderate the temperature.  A Carolina wren inspected the cinquefoil for anything tasty.  Mockingbirds continued to harvest wild cherries.  A section of the oldest dogwood appeared to be dying. It looked fine all through Spring and early Summer.  Another section died a few years ago.  The mountain mint was stressed by the drought but seems to be recovering.  

The pool yielded nothing but scarab beetles, roaches, and itty-bitty wasps/bees/ants.  A fresh load of cherries were sunk on the bottom.  I did evict one spider.  A duskywing joined the bees ans wasps on the mountain mint.   One funny, little bee did its best to intimidate me.  I found the Argiope which was quite cleverly camouflaged as a stem.  The orchard spider was in the same place as before but the light was wrong to see the web.  A female hummer visited that feeder.  

Then a male pine warbler considered the hanging dishes.  The brown thrasher returned for more cherries.  A white breasted nuthatch was frustrated by a house finch.  Then when it finally got on the feeder perch, a chickadee landed on top of it and the finch attacked them both.  

Humid

While not especially hot, today was stuffy with humidity.  The hibiscus had another flower today, the third in a row.  Lots of cherries were on the ground and in the water, but I didn't see as many birds eating them.  I spotted a downy woodpecker doing chin-ups in the tree.  A catbird popped up on the fence.  Something that I think was the kingbird perched atop the redwood, briefly.  A hummer visited the feeder but didn't feed, so I will replace the sugar water tomorrow.  A Carolina wren was more satisfied with barkbutter balls and a brown headed nuthatch with seeds.  A crow hesitated, but finally ate K's peanuts.  A songbird chased a bigger bird into the trees too fast for me to react. 

I rescued three mama spiders and a very big scarab beetle, also smaller scarab and ground beetles.  The humidity brought dragonflies.  A female blue dasher used one of my perches.  A female great blue skimmer used another perch.  And prince baskettails zoomed overhead.  A tiger swallowtail and a small pale butterfly moved too fast for a picture.  I found a firefly under a gladiolus leaf.  A snail floated in the water but I suspect it was a land snail so I rescued it, maybe. 

Green Junebug

A crow joined the cherry eaters.  It landed almost on top of a mockingbird.  Chickadees and titmice liked the cherries too.   A brown headed nuthatch was only interested in seeds.  Something ate the sunflower petals then broke the stalk. 

While in the pool, I fished out a spider I thought had drowned, but it recovered as soon as it was in the air.  The usual beetles needed help but a green June beetle, Cotinus nitida, had rescued itself.  It was the first I'd seen this year.  Later a tiger swallowtail flitted through the trees.  A thread-waisted wasp enjoyed the mountain mint.  And underneath, I found an infant Argiope in its web. 

In the front yard, a rainlily bloomed.  Skippers fed on the lantana. And in an arc around where the oak used to be, white mushrooms the size of saucers spread their parasols.   The stalk had a ring but I didn't see a cup and I thought the gills bruised blue.  However, the best fit I could find online was Chlorophyllum molybdites which is poisonous.  By evening the sky was clear except for fiery clouds on the Western horizon.  

 

Hibiscus blossom

The crow perched on the railing and thought about the food in the hanging dishes.  I think this was early for the hibiscus to bloom, and the plant was quite small so far this year - only two stalks instead of a half dozen and not very tall.  I didn't see the flower until I was in the water.  The usual beetles were swimming along with things I don't rescue.  Something eating cherries dropped some in the water.  The mockingbird I saw cherry picking was careful.  A Carolina wren was only interested in barkbutter and mealworms.  A brown headed nuthatch wanted seeds.  A hummer disdained the sugarwater so I discarded it.  I glimpsed butterflies and prince baskettail dragonflies.  The milkweed had more buds.  The noon sky was full of wispy patterns.  A shower in the afternoon kept me inside. 

Fierce heat

A crow got breakfast where K had scattered barkbutter balls on the patio.  I noticed it had some white spots on its right wing.  A mockingbird ate from the dish which I refilled.  So did a bluebird.  There was water in the birdbath from yesterday's rain and enough humidity to keep it from evaporating.  

The temperature rose so fast that I went swimming in the morning while there was still shade.  Storm winds had re-trashed the water with leaves, needles, catkins, bark, and unidentified tree fragments.  I rescued a bumblebee, a huge black ant, and three black beetles, but mostly I just kept sweeping up armloads of vegetative detritus.  

The thermometer registered 98°.  Only chickadees and titmice came out in the midday sun.  I also saw a few wasps and one tiger swallowtail, but no dragonflies.  Later in the afternoon, a fledgling crow begged outside my window.  Its parent was refusing to feed it but keeping an eye on it.  

At supper, a brown headed nuthatch joined the queue for seeds.  A Carolina wren shopped around the feeders.  

 

Rain

A brown thrasher showed up early.  Goldfinches paid a brief visit. A mockingbird inspected the barkbutter balls.  A brown headed nuthatch got a turn at the feeder and then dropped its seed.  A bluebird watched.  The day was warmer than I expected under a mostly cloudy sky with a strong West wind.  One source predicted a thunderstorm but another said no rain.  

When I swam, there was even a little sunshine.  I rescued a spider and the biggest camel cricket I've seen.  It stupidly jumped back into the water so I rescued it twice.  I regret not having the camera.  The wind dumped a lot of tree detritus into the water, mostly from the red cedar.  After I got out and was dripping off, the light suddenly dropped and I hurried inside.  We got measurable rain, some lightning, and high winds.  A mockingbird ventured out but the barkbutter was soup.  

 

Zebra swallowtail

Another beautiful day of which I missed too much.  I had to rush off early to an appointment but afterward I went to Wild Birds Unlimited since I was in the vicinity.  I played with Merlin taking (bad) phone photos of goldfinches and a song sparrow while I waited for the store to open.  Back home, I admired the lilies in the front yard, white and dark red, also daylilies and a rainlily.  A skink descended the bedroom wall.  

At lunch, a gorgeous zebra swallowtail fed on the milkweed flowers.  The crow demanded treats.  A mockingbird was camera-shy.  A Carolina wren was perky.  Then I had online meetings.  

A white breasted nuthatches joined us for supper but was unwilling to share with a titmouse.   

Heat wave

A brown thrasher took off just as I pressed the shutter button.  Fortunate it only wanted to get closer to the barkbutter balls on the patio.  The mockingbird preferred to eat them from the dish.  A white breasted nuthatch agreed.  A Carolina wren took its treat under the furniture.  A crow finally came for the barkbutter balls.  I glimpsed a bluebird.  

An egret waded under the new bulkhead across the creek.  I saw 91° on the thermometer.  The tiny butterfly I'm guessing was a spring azure was back to torment me.  So was a cabbage white.  The milkweed bloomed.  

 

Surprise shower

There was a little rain before I got up, but it dried and sunshine mixed with clouds.  A white breasted nuthatch, a mockingbird, and a red bellied woodpecker all escaped the camera.  A brown thrasher took its time and I took its picture.   A female bluebird made frequent visits.  (I still haven't seen any activity at the bluebird house.)  The squirrel was eating peppered suet again.  A titmouse got some seeds.  

One of the brown thrashers noticed the barkbutter balls that K put on the patio for the crow.   A blue jay found the dish feeder empty.  A crow swooped down on the barkbutter balls, scattering the other birds.  It wasn't greedy and a cardinal noticed there were some left.  

The surprise shower came after lunch.  The wind gusted and the sky darkened.  Rain streaked the North windows for about ten minutes.  Then the sun returned, accompanied by a bluebird.  A blue jay was close behind.  The red belly returned and this time I was lucky.  

Nuthatch

The sunshine was intermittent as there were a lot of clouds.  Some wind gusts flung the birdhouse around enough to addle eggs.  Today K tempted the crow with a buffet of seeds and barkbuter balls.  Both were found to be acceptable.  This particular crow had a noticeable beard.  I was whining about how little I had seen all day when a white breasted nuthatch kindly let me take some pictures.  A blue jay and a bluebird were in too much of a hurry.  

 

Showers & sun

Yesterday was really busy.  I glimpsed a white  breasted nuthatch on the seed feeder but I've nothing to show for it.  Cabbage whites flitted around and I saw a blue jay.  A squirrel has been eating the suet that was supposed to be too hot pepper flavored for squirrels.  The temperature warmed up and the wind wasn't so fierce.  This is where we held our celebration.

We had a rain shower at breakfast today and visits from a blue jay and a crow.  Bluebirds and a mockingbird showed up at lunch. A titmouse joined the seed eaters.  I have been persuaded that the bush I've been calling sakaki, Cleyera japonica, is actually a cheap substitute, False Japanese Cleyera, Ternstroemia gymnanthera .  They are related and look very similar.  But I am not absolutely convinced.

Feeder fun

I missed a shot at a white breasted nuthatch but I got the butterbutt.  Blue jays, bluebirds, and a mockingbird visited.  A titmouse was eager for seeds.  A squirrel raided the barkbutter dish, but there was some left for bluebirds and the butterbutt.  A mockingbird didn't find much left.  There was more sunshine than predicted.  I need to replace the suet.  

 

Bright again

Sunshine returned but not warmth.  A cardinal sampled the jelly.  I missed a blue jay and a bluebird but the red belly cooperated.  White throats were still hanging around.  A squirrel had a badly abused tail, probably from a mating competition.  

The female pileated came back for the suet remnant.  Her crest was up, whether because the suet was almost gone or some other reason.  She seemed to freeze for a while on the post so maybe there was a raptor around.  

 

 

 

 

A cabbage white flew despite the wind but that was the only butterfly I saw.   A white breasted nuthatch came for seeds.
