"Winter Storm Stella"

Winds howled overnight and rain hammered the house.  The rainfall dwindled to drizzle in the morning, but the gale winds continued all day.  North of here, vast quantities of snow were predicted.  The light was poor at breakfast.  The birdbath and mealworm dish were brimming with rainwater.  A song sparrow foraged in the mulch.  The female red belly, the yellow rumped warbler, and a wren ate suet.  A pine warbler also came for suet.  It seems to avoid bright light.  K tossed out bark butter balls for the squirrels but white throats got there first. One of the squirrels was a mess - half a tail and patchy fur.

An all-gray warbler appeared on suet.  Downy woodpeckers and the yellow rump pushed it away. In the afternoon, the wind tore holes in the overcast.  A pelican labored upstream and I glimpsed an osprey.  Two great blue herons flew downstream and then one returned.  Crows and gulls seemed to seek out the gusts.  A pair of hoodies emerged from under the dock to take in a bit of sun, then back they went.  Later I saw two females paddling hard.  Then some buffleheads went past.

A titmouse had an early supper, as I did.  The pine warbler was back too.  It was quite a change to arrive in Norfolk in the daylight.  The wind never stopped, but by the time I got home, the overcast had torn into fragments.
