Perfect for birdwatching

A sunny, cold day with not much wind made the birds hungry and encouraged them to venture out.  Lots of juncos hunted seeds but moved too fast for me.  One left the ground for the feeder.  A white throated sparrow stayed on terra firma.  Red breasted nuthatches came for seeds about a minute apart, but sometimes they had to wait on bigger birds.  The downy woodpeckers finished off the suet and turned to seeds.

A bluebird went for bark butter balls only to be shoved off by a brown thrasher that in turn was pushed aside by a red bellied woodpecker.  Later, blue jays found out about the bark butter balls.  I thought I saw a female red belly, but now I'm not sure.  A couple of pelicans made several passes over the creek but there was still too much vegetation.

K installed a fresh brick of suet which attracted a white breasted nuthatch.  The blue jays and the red bellied woodpeckers had some too.  Warblers, pine and yellow rumped, were opportunists, sampling everything.

There was an odd, possibly romantic, moment with two squirrels atop the seed feeder.  One tried the suet and had to wash its mouth in the birdbath.  (Hot pepper flavor!)
