The sky was blue and there was a breeze, but is was already sticky at sun up. Bugs were flying and something dipped into the pool a couple of times. Fascinating ripple and convection patterns move through the water before the pump comes on.
Bees, wasps, a leafhopper (specifically an adult spittlebug), a confused moth, battling skippers, a cloudless sulphur, and a dragonfly came out in the heat. So did a skink. A chickadee and the ubiquitous crows were all the birds.
The black bug with red lines is the leafhopper, or froghopper, or two-lined spittlebug. The fiery skipper on the portulaca kept getting into aerial fights with another fiery skipper.
